Search Engine Optimization Planning On a Shoe String Budget

Here is how most people plan their Internet marketing efforts:

1)They get an idea

2)They buy a domain name for it

3)They read up on web design and decide they cannot do the site themselves

4)They hire a web designer and spend $3K to $10K designing and coding their sites

5)They wait for the traffic to start pouring in

Unfortunately, that is not the proper way of planning for a site. Internet marketing is just like any other type of marketing, except it is probably a lot more effective! You need to approach Internet marketing from a bottom up approach. You will need to determine how much money you would like for your site to generate first (be reasonable). Then determine how many clients it would take to reach that number. Then determine how many visits it will take to get a client. Then determine how you will be getting those visitors to your site (natural search engine optimization, PPC, banner ads, targeted opted in email marketing etc).

Many people go out and spend thousands of dollars on building a shiny website and within a few months they take down the site as the site did not have much traffic to sustain it. Those that are successful at Internet marketing will set a budget for driving visitors to their sites first, then set a budget for web design, hosting, maintenances, admin costs, legal fees etc.

If you want to know what budget to set for SEO, just know that if the firm you are requesting an SEO quote from does not have any pricing on their site, and they ask to see your site before they price anything, then that quote could be totally arbitrary. It’s not like they are going to sit down and re-do your entire database structure and re-code everything by hand and the process is going to take 6 months to complete. Not by a long shot. They are going to do on-site search engine optimization and off-site search engine optimization, using almost the same methodology for every client, yet different clients will get very different price quotes, depending on how much business they expect that website to get as a result of the SEO and how much money that business can shell out for SEO.
