Add Fresh Content To Your Search Engine Optimization Mix

There has been a battle online for at least a decade between the content camp vs. the backlink camp. Each feels the other is a waste of time. However, we at watch a lot of keyword rankings for our clients, and it is clear from what we observe, the two go hand-in-hand. You cannot have one without the other. However, if it came down to which has more weight with regard to SEO, well backlinks are clearly far more critical than content. You can have lots of great content, but if you have no backlinks, you will be missing a major component of what it takes to get to the first page of major search engines. Google, Bing and Ask algorithms are not made of just one component. Even when it comes to backlinks, it’s not about the volume of links, it’s about the quality of the links, the age of the links, the age of the site pointing to the link, the manner in which the link is pointing to the site etc.. Same is true with content. You have to realize that if you scrape content from some other source, change a few words here and there, that is not going to help your cause of improving your website’s search engine rakings.  Your content has to be unique, it has to be inviting, it has to be informative, and most of all it has to be fresh.

Fresh content means constant updates to your site using new original content that helps people that are spending time online searching, find what they are looking for. When I write constant, it does not mean on a daily or even weekly basis. It just means you have to have a plan based on your particular industry of how often you will be making content updates to your site. I would recommend about once a month for most businesses, but for certain types of businesses, I would recommend daily updates. For example, if you run a cabinetry service, dog grooming service or furniture business online, updating your content once a month is fine. However, if you run a PR business you should be making updates nearly every day. Every industry is different. You need to see what your competitors are doing. If you notice the sites in the top 10 search engine rankings are making updates nearly every day to their sites, than you have to do the same thing. In fact, you may have to make updates twice a day on your site to beat them.
